Lego Quest - Archeological Dig

This is Austyn's Lego Quest Entry for last week.

"I did two archeological digs. The first one was the discovery of an Egyptian tomb. The tomb had been exposed to the sun for a little while. The man is observing the tomb with his flashlight. He knows that it has been exposed to the light for some time because there is a plant growing in it and a scorpion on top of the plant. The second one is a dig that takes place over the tomb. The men are uncovering an alien being (you can see his head sticking out). This tells us that aliens were likely on earth during ancient Egyptian times."

Crime Investigation

At a birthday party that Austyn attended recently he was given a little crime investigation package. He brought it home and we started to do the activities in the package. To add to this we used his favourite activity book again. Show Off by Sarah Hines Stephens and Bethany Mann.

Austyn found an activity in the book on how to isolate DNA. It was interesting.

Another Rocket

Austyn chooses what activities he wants to do for his homeschooling. Much of the time he chooses math or science. This is a recent project we did.

We made another rocket. We have many rockets and this one was in a fun book we have here in our home library. It's one of his favourite books to do activities from now and I got it from another unschooling blog. It's called Show Off - How to Do Absolutely Everything One Step at a Time by Sarah Hines Stephens and Bethany Mann.

I love the book but I was disappointed in our rocket attempt. This is our second time trying to make a homemade rocket and trying to get it to take off. This book had a better design than the other one we did in the past from another book. We followed the instructions and all we got was a little "pop" sound and the rocket jumped about an inch. That was it! It's so funny because we are suppose to keep it away from windows. I'm not sure, but I think that jumping an inch wouldn't hurt the windows. LOL! Here is Zoe trying it out after we got it to jump a few times on the one sack of baking soda.

Canadian National Park - Point Pelee

We took a trip to Point Pelee. Our hope was to have a nice get away as a family and see some raptors while they migrated through the area.

In the visitor's centre we did many things. Austyn had a nice long talk to the park staff about raptors. Here the kids are listening to different sounds recorded in the park.

Along with learning about wildlife and history of the park the kids got to pretend that they were someone/something else.

There were some spactacular views.

It was a wonderful fall day. The leaves are just starting to change colour.

We traveled down to the Southern Tip of Canada. The kids were not allowed to go in the water. It is very dangerous to swim here. So Zoe took advantage of some great climbing rocks.

The kids also played in the sand while Daddy checked out the view with our binoculars. The picture just above this caption shows the tip of mainland Canada. There is a more southern point of Canada but it's on an island in Lake Erie.

Zoe did some more climbing.

Austyn did some rock throwing.

We didn't see many raptors but we did see many warblers, gulls and butterflies. It was a nice, mild, fall day and we enjoyed our visit to the park.

Book Sharing Monday - Princess Backwards

Princess Backwards by Jane Gray is a wonderful little story about a princess who lives in world were everything is done backwards. She found it hard to be backward like everyone else and practiced but it was no use. In the end we learn that (Quoting from the book)... "Sometimes, different is a lovely thing to be."
