Book Sharing Monday - Dr. Frankenstein's Human Body Book

Are we just learning about how the body works? NO! We are learning how to be an assistant in the making of a human body! If it were possible to put a body together we would become great assistants.

The pages are thick board book pages but don't let that fool you. This book is a board book to make it look thick and designed to look old. It's a great book that makes learning about the human body fun. There are many antique drawings yet it's well illustrated to help with understanding.

Happy Birthday Zoe!

We had plans to go out for her birthday, but instead had to stay home because Austyn had a fever.

She woke up early to open gifts before Daddy left for work. This worked out because at least she could enjoy her gifts all day since we couldn't go out.

She couldn't go through the day without making a gift for me. She put some odds and ends in a box and wrapped it up for me.

She had a fun day playing and fell asleep on the couch inside a bin she just got.

After supper we had cake and played a game.

She chose her favourite game. It's called Guess What I Am. She took this picture of Daddy playing.

Hockey Play Offs

The play-offs have started. This means that the season is coming to an end.

They are going to miss their friends.

Lego Quest - Food

Zoe and Austyn both made something this time. Austyn made a roast chicken and lettuce salad and Zoe made a big sandwich. Here is the link to Lego Quest to see what other kids made.

Kitties Love to Watch

When the kids get busy on a project the cats are there. When we play games the cats are there. Just about everything we do at home, the cats are there. They love to watch us and be with us. Here is a picture of Zoe getting into a project that she initiated on her own and one of our cats is right up close watching. Zoe is so use to this that she just keeps on working away and the cat just keeps on watching.

Books on the iPad

The iPad has proven to be a good investment so far. Sure, sometimes we play games that seem to have no educational relevance, but it has also been a great educational tool. I will do a post on some of the apps we use. Here is Zoe using it to read a story. She has seen just about every Alice In Wonderland movie that exists, has acted out all of her favourite scenes and memorized many of the sayings and songs. Now she is listening to the story on our iPad. The program she uses is called vBookz. She chooses the book off the virtual shelf and can get the program to read the book to her. It has a little rectangular magnifying glass that moves along the lines and highlights each word as the program reads it.

Business Cards

I sat with each of them to make their own business cards. I thought it was a fun idea since we've been meeting friends that we'd like to keep in touch with. Zoe's business card is a princess theme and Austyn's business card is on raptor spotting. They started to hand out a few at hockey practice with our supervision.

Book Sharing Monday - Cat & Mouse

Cat & Mouse by Ian Schoenherr is such a fun book.

My kids both laughed their heads off at the images. We have two cats and I guess Austyn and Zoe could truly relate to the way cats react to certain things. The story is fun and reminds us of two nursery rhymes while entertaining with the illustrations. This will be a regular in our home.

Art of Matter

We used a book from our library called Touch It! Materials, matter and you. I think it's targeted to the very young (which is perfect for Zoe). Usually we use books that are more directed at Austyn.

I put all kinds of things in a muffin tin, got out some glue and card stock. They made pictures using different materials.

Zoe's photos and a video

Zoe loves to photograph and videotape her days. Here are many pictures and one video that she took. I like the video. I'm not sure if it was intentional but she is showing Austyn playing a game on the iPad but you can see him in the reflection and our cat sitting behind his head on the back of the couch.

Hockey - Almost Over

Hockey is a big commitment. It means two or three times a week traveling to different arenas. Daddy sometimes has to adjust his work hours just to make it to games and practices.

In we were in a small town many of the kids went to school together and stuck together. Here in the city the kids get placed in their team and are mixed from different schools. This means that it's easier to meet new friends.

Austyn has one game left before the play-offs so this past game most of the team met at McDonald's for breakfast.

When the house is clean

One aspect of our busy lives that I have a hard time keeping up with is house work. The interesting thing is that once the house is clean and all of their supplies are in the correct place they go right to work. Here they are working on their books. They like notepads for making books on different things. They add words, pictures and whatever else they want. Zoe's book is like a journal of whatever she feels like in that moment and Austyn's is a book all on dragons that he has created.

Book Sharing Monday - Gimme Cracked Corn & I Will Share

If your child loves cute "CORNY" jokes, this is a must read! Kevin O'Malley filled this book, bursting out of the pages with crack-your-child-up kind of humour.

Most of the jokes my kids got and they laughed from cover to cover.

The jokes are around chickens and the farm.

When asked if he wanted to go find the beautiful barn by Chicken, George replied, "Well, I have been feeling a little cooped up lately."

Austyn made these creations to represent the characters of the Movie "How To Train A Dragon". The above picture is a dragon cave.

This is the Rock Crusher.

This is the Monsterous Nightmare with a random viking on it.

This is Astrid riding a Nadder Head.

This is Hick-Up and the dragon is named Toothless and it's a Night Fury.

A Fish Legs on a Gronckle and a Terrible Tennor.

 This is a viking home.
These are some more people from the movie. The man on the left is the leader. There is a Thunder Drum in front of them.

Envelope Design

This is an envelope that Zoe designed. She printed off a bunch of book marks off of the internet, cut them out, and placed them in this envelope. I had to capture a picture of it. It says "From Zoe" and "Love Mommy". The picture in the middle is of her and I dancing and the girl on the right is letting me know that that is the spot I need to pull to open the envelope. She tapped all of the envelope shut except that spot.

World Spelling Day

World Math Day didn't seem as much fun for us but we really enjoyed World Spelling day.

Austyn played and did well on more than one level. He seemed to enjoy it.

Zoe did a good job also. World Spelling Day was a success in our house.

Lego Quest - Maze

This is Austyn's maze for Lego Quest. Here is the link to the entries for Mazes.

After viewing all of the entries, Austyn was inspired to make a game. Here is the first version of the game. He made a spinner. The goal of the game is to collect all of the diamonds. There is a monster and when you land on his spots (the black side of the spinner) he steals the diamonds and in order to get them back you need to spin it to the diamond spots. We also use the spinner to move our men 1 or 2 spots at a time. If we land on someone we need to go back one spot.

We all played it for the first time and as we played Austyn altered the game little by little to make it better.

He was also inspired by the video entry of the maze with a ball.

this moment - little mice got in the jello! ; )
