Another Walk with Discoveries

When we discovered this fallen tree Austyn said that the could walk across it over the creek. I told him not to because, even though I have no doubt he could do it, if he does fall it will hurt because the water would be so cold and our walk home would be long. Once he climbed up on it he realized that because the bark is all gone it's very slippery.

These leaves were found like this. I found it amazing that there would be enough order in our world that these two leaves would actually fall like this onto one another. The world is so amazing!

This leaf is so cool! It looks like a face. The kids wanted to grab it right away but I stopped them long enough to take this shot. These are the kinds of things that help me understand some of the religions out there that I wasn't told much about growing up. It is so obvious that there is Spirit in all things.

Austyn figured out that he could use the slide as a ramp to propel stones up into the air. I finally told him to stop because I didn't want anyone to get hurt. After that, with the help of Zoe, they discovered that a slide with stones coming down on it is very slippery and hard to climb.

I'm sure those rocks are cold but they wanted to cover up Austyns feet and hands.

This poor bee was inside one of the bolt holes on the play equipment. Austyn found it. Apparently still alive and has been there for a while since there is a bunch of poop under it. Poor thing!

Ya... I don't mind if my kids get dirty especially if they aren't in good clothes. They are kids and love to have fun.

I'm not sure how many more days like this we will get this year. It was nice to get out and enjoy the weather and the fresh air. The breeze was cold but it was still nice.

Rainbows EVERYWHERE!

It's very hard to tell by this picture but Zoe is moving all over looking at the wall and floor pointing to all of the rainbows. I can see at least one rainbow here on the floor beside her (to her right). This gave me an opportunity (eventhough they already have learned where rainbows come from) to talk about how the little gems stuck on her dress are like a prism and they are reflecting the light in a way that splits all of the colours up so we can see them all.

It's so amazing how they just discover things on their own and if I notice I can make it a moment of learning.

“Have faith in your dreams and someday your rainbow will come smiling through. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep believing, the dream that you wish will come true.”

What's Inside an Egg?

What's inside an Egg? We found out. After reading a book on where a chick comes from and Austyn saying that he wanted to eat eggs for lunch I decided that we'd look inside the eggs before eating them. I helped them to carefully crack the egg and we talked about all of the parts and what the parts are for.

Egyptian/Sumarian Clay Hieroglyphs

It was a bit hard for them to actually do their own letters in the clay but I had them play with it after we read about it and then when they were done I asked Austyn if he wanted me to do his name on his clay. He thought that it was so cool! I ran out of space and had to curve the last letter. Zoe wanted to keep her clay piece as she made it so we left hers as her art work and she cleaned up for me. The clay is now drying in our homeschool room.

Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary

I think most of these photos are self-explanatory.  I should also add that this was a superb homeschool day for us. We did all of our curriculum without any fuss, went to the library, a quick stop to the police station to set up a field trip, and off to Jack Minor's Sanctuary with more homeschool fun after.

Who needs a quote at the end of the post when Jack Minor does such a good job of providing quotes?
