Science Sunday - The Ant Kill

Yes... sadly... they were killing ants. They were trying different things on the ants to see what would kill the ants faster when they came in contact with the different substances. I saw them use, Off Skintastic, water, salt, baking soda, vinegar, chalk, and anything else they could find. This all went on while I picked weeds in the garden. They noticed after they were finished that the ants didn't like to walk on the area that they used to do the experiments. And... yes... Austyn is sticking out his tongue at the ants in the picture above because they can't walk over that big wet spot to get to the ant hole. Sigh... well... I guess this is science, the unschooling way. LOL!!!

Science Sunday - Weather Study

We haven`t posted Science Sunday for a while. It`s nice to start getting back to updating our blog.

One thing we`ve noticed so far, living here, compared to back in Ontario, is that there is more sun, less rain, and usually there is hardly any wind. This past week we`ve had a good deal of wind so we made a wind sock, two weather vanes, and two paper windmills (seen above).

I did not take anymore pictures but I did use The Curiosity Club Kids`Nature Activity Book again. We are in the middle of the weather section. We also did the experiment to learn about condensation and humidity but it did not work. We put cold water with four ice cubes outside and on a warm morning and waited to see if any water drops formed on the outside of the glass but nothing noticeable happened. I guess it just was not humid enough that day here in dry Alberta. :)

Science Sunday - A Coffee Bean

This is a simple experiment that was initiated by Austyn. He noticed that a coffee bean floats when he puts it in water. He asked me if it will continue to float if he leaves it there overnight. So I told him to leave and and let's see what happens. The next morning we saw that it wasn't floating anymore and it had started to discolour the water. We discussed what may have happened to cause this outcome.
